Canadian swimmers net record ninth medal

Penny Oleksiak and Joshua Liendo helped Canada reach a record medal haul on Friday at the world aquatics championships in Budapest.

Toronto's Oleksiak won a Canadian-record eighth career medal and Liendo, from Markham, Ont., picked up two medals in a jampacked three-final day to give Canada a record nine medals (two gold, four silver, three bronze) heading into the final day of swimming competition in Hungary.

Liendo swam the opening leg and Oleksiak took on anchor duty as Canada picked up a silver medal in the 4x100 mixed freestyle relay.

Oleksiak's overall world championship medal tally of two silver and six bronze put her one ahead of teammate Kylie Masse for most ever for a Canadian. Javier Acevedo and Kayla Sanchez, both from Toronto, swam the second and third leg respectively as Canada finished in three minutes, 20.61 seconds. Australia finished first in a world-record time of 3:19.38, and the U.S. was third.

The relay capped a busy day for Liendo, who now has three medals at the world championships. He claimed his second earlier Friday with a bronze in the men's 100-metre butterfly.

Meanwhile, Katie Ledecky extended her record haul of medals and Australia set a world record in the mixed 4x100 metre freestyle final. American star Ledecky won the 800 freestyle final for the fifth time at the worlds to seal her fourth consecutive 400/800/1,500 triple at the event.

JAYS COACH MARTINEZ SUSPENDED FIVE GAMES

Major League Baseball suspended Toronto Blue Jays hitting coach Guillermo Martinez for five games on Friday for making contact with an umpire and unsportsmanlike conduct.

Martinez, 37, was also fined an undisclosed amount for his heated interaction with umpire Doug Eddings during the pre-game exchange of lineup cards ahead of Wednesday's contest against the White Sox in Chicago. Martinez was ejected from the game. Martinez was apparently upset with Eddings for his calls behind the plate in Toronto's 7-6 loss to the White Sox in 12 innings on Tuesday.

He shook hands with the umpiring crew shortly before being ejected. Barring an appeal, the suspension was to begin Friday night when the Blue Jays open a three-game series with the Brewers in Milwaukee.
