Health hub fundraising campaign gets a boost

A fundraising campaign in support of the Cowan Community Health Hub in Paris got a boost this week.

Ron and Joan Underwood and their family, owners of Advantage Maintenance Products in Paris, made a $150,000 donation in support of the health hub at a donor appreciation event. The family moved to Brant County more than 50 years ago.

“For all of those years, Joan and I worked at the 100- year-old White Mop Wringer Co. in Paris whose company name was changed to Advantage Maintenance Products many years ago,” Ron Underwood said in a statement. “We also resided, as a family, for most of these years in Paris.

“When the construction of the Cowan Community Health Hub was announced, Joan, in particular, was adamant that our family business, Advantage Maintenance Products, and the family be a significant supporter of this new facility.”

The hub's kitchen will be named the “Joan Underwood Community Kitchen” in recognition of the donation.

The bulk of the donation $100,000 – will be used to cover the costs of the kitchen, while the remaining $50,000 will go toward electric vehicle charging stations and a meeting room.

More than 190 people who donated to the fundraising campaign attended Thursday's private event and ribbon-cutting ceremony.

“This campaign was incredibly successful because of the generosity of the community,” said Mayor David Bailey. “Thanks to the support of the community, we now have a state-of-the-art health hub; improving access to health and social services for all residents.”

Located at 25 Curtis Ave. N. in Paris, the $13-million, 41,365-square-foot facility opened in November 2021. It brings a range of health and social services under one roof.

In early 2021, Brant officials launched a $2-million fundraising campaign in support of the hub. The campaign generated $2.4 million in community donations, including an $800,000 contribution from the Cowan Foundation.

A Wall of Gratitude has been installed at the hub, listing major contributors to the campaign.

The facility includes sustainable design features, including solar panels and energy-efficient fixtures and equipment.
